TedBoy Bakery in Bangsar: Homemade, Wholesome, Comfort

What: TedBoy Bakery, Bangsar, KL
When: February 2013
Food: bakery and café
Rating: 9/10

Amid the endless newness of the life of a food blogger, it is nice to have some constants, and one of my newly adopted constants is TedBoy Bakery, where the staff sing out “welcome” almost as loudly as the freshly baked loaves whisper my name as I approach the counter.

Light and bright and welcoming interior
From my previous post detailing my first encounter (September 2012) with this delightful little bakery will attest, I was smitten from the very beginning. TedBoy’s Sun-dried Tomato bread rolls get me through the week (their insides are tinged red and dotted with sweet, chewy tomato bites), and their fresh juices or hot Gryphon teas make me feel loved while I check the emails on the iPads or chat with a pal over a sandwich the size of the National Mosque.

The cute art work was created for TedBoy
Over the past months, Edward and Patrina – the couple who own this lovely little place –  have continued to impress me with their seeming lack of stress at the prospect of running their first ever F&B establishment, and the staff are always ready with smiles to take orders or to fill paper bags with croissants, pastries, muffins, or loaves of bread that will beg you to take them away from their display cabinets and into your tum.

On the times when I make it to a table to eat something more substantial, I am always pleased with the huge servings of fresh, lovely food, so when Edward and Patrina invited me back to try out some of the best-selling items on the menu, I jumped at the chance to spend more time in this terrific little bakery.

Cute cupcakes are a great gift (to yourself)
Despite their busy schedules (their travel plans are enough to make you need a sit down, before you factor in a F&B business and a small baby), the couple had time to chat while we dined. Their first bakery baby may be doing well, but they are brimming with new ideas, and propose changing the internal layout to make more space for dining in, as well as branching out into catering and, perhaps, delivery of their baked goods.

A new addition to the menu is a dinner set (served 6pm-9pm) to attract the post-work crowd, and it is one that offers great value considering the portions and the quality of the goods. For just RM45++, two people can share a gourmet sandwich, a salad or pizza, a bowl of soup, and two glasses of ice tea.
Make it a dinner date...

Another nifty offer is the Tea-Time Treat, which runs weekdays from 3pm-6pm and is priced at RM9.90++ for a cake of the day and a hot tea to wash it down with. Who needs more reasons to treat yourself after a bad day at work?

The Ham Bagel stands tall and tastes super
The breakfast menu has been extended too, and the dishes available daily from 8.30am-11.30am include an unexpectedly excellent Ham Bagel (RM9.90) which I greatly enjoyed getting my chops around. A fluffy, slightly chewy sesame bagel was practically bursting with slices of turkey ham and oozing cheese from all orifices, while a slathering of mayo, some lettuce, and egg lent power to a seriously filling and tasty start to the day.

A Breakfast Platter to start the day
For something even more substantial, the Breakfast Platter (RM18) is a good option, and while pork doesn’t feature on this plate, there is still plenty to please thanks to the tasty turkey ham, the herby chicken and mushroom sausage, the mound of fluffy and creamy scrambled egg, and the sautéed, slightly salty, mushrooms. A bit more baked tomato would have been welcome, but the slice of toasted, buttered sourdough that completed the selection is more than enough to fill the hungry.

The rest of the menu comprises salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and burgers, all of which are prepared fresh to order and taste like homemade comfort food, yet manage to be healthy too. The salads are large and luscious, and an all-time crowd pleaser (my colleagues love this) is the Classic Waldorf (RM14.90), which throws apples, grapes, raisins, and walnuts into a frenzy with mayonnaise before piling them onto fresh crisp leaves.
Classic Waldorf doesn't scrimp on toppings

For something more decadent, the Smoked Norwegian Salmon and Mixed Greens salad (RM17.90) is a good place to fill the belly, and the combination of rocket, sweetcorn, and lettuce whizzled in a wonderful honey vinaigrette – topped with neat curls of tasty salmon – is one that will never fail to please.

Curls of smoked salmon is always a good friend of salad

I confess I would never have ordered the Juicy Wholemeal Burger (RM18.90) had I been there uninvited, but I am grateful to have been introduced to this mighty piece of edible splendour.

A Juicy Burger that lives up to its name!
The burger is available as either chicken or beef, but the beef patty that I got my chops around was utterly divine. A fat chunk of meat and herbs was grilled and adorned with melted cheese, before being slipped inside a home-baked bun (firm outer, soft inner) and piled with sweet caramalised onions and a dab of lettuce.

A side of salad offers some greenery (with lovely dressing), but it is all about the meat, and this is a super option for those who enjoy a burger but want to have something that won’t leave a greasy hole in the stomach (at TB, the bun is wholegrain while the patty is of a good quality).

Who says you can't have breakfast tea at 2pm?!
There was more than enough food to keep us occupied for an hour or two, and my two favourite beverages graced me lips in the time it took to eat and chat. I started with one of their wonderful, fresh, goodness packed juices, and ended with a large mug of British Breakfast Tea (the Gryphon tea bags are silky pockets of proper tea leaves and it makes all the difference).

It would  have been easy to spend the whole afternoon chatting and nibbling, but Patrina and Edward are busy people, so I thanked them and left them to the next project and plan, promising to be back soon.

If you haven’t visited this little bakery yet, you are a silly sausage. This wholesome venture is run by a couple with a passion and a love for what they do, and their dedication seeps into the bakery like the smell of baking muffins and makes the experience of a visit (not to mention the edibles) something special.

Thanks Edward and Patrina and the staff at TedBoy for continuing to make me welcome – I will be back as soon as my supply of sun-dried tomato rolls runs out (i.e. tomorrow!).
